I feel the need to explain a bit about the pricing of bulldogs and touch on some of the reasons as to why they are so expensive. This is a question that I'm frequently asked!
First of all it cannot be stressed enough that the purchase of a bulldog is an investment and it is not the time for "deal" shopping. Looking for the cheapest price will cost you in the end. If you cannot afford the $2,500 or more that a healthy and carefully bred puppy will cost, then please WAIT until you can! The heartache that can come from obtaining a puppymill or backyard breeder puppy is not worth it merely to satisfy the impatience of wanting a puppy right NOW. Not to mention that you would be supporting such practices. When breeding is done right there is little, if any, money to be made. If all the aspects of breeding were added up it's safe to say that most breeders would be lucky to break even.
For starters, my bullies are fed only the highest quality holistic food. Between the price of food and supplements, I would need to sell two puppies annually just to cover this expense alone.
There are of course vaccinations and Heartguard and any other unexpected vet expenses that may arise! Also, have you priced dog toys lately?? And my lil' boogers are pretty darn spoiled.
This is before any breeding has even taken place..let's start with the beginning of a heat cycle. Once that starts, the hour long drives to my vet (who specializes in bulldog reproduction) start in order for progesterone levels to be tested. This is done repeatedly so we know exactly when ovulation occurs. Once ovulation is in full swing, artificial insemination is the next order of business. Also, there is usually the cost of a stud dog as well. Stud fees tend to be pretty steep. That is unless you are planning to use your own boy! Once the breeding is over and a couple of weeks have passed, the expense of having an ultrasound done is a must. Of course it's not uncommon for a breeding to not "take", so all of these expenses already and you may not even have puppies! It's also not unusual to only have one or two puppies.
In the event of a successful breeding, then a caessarian section needs to be scheduled. C-sections are surgery and are not cheap. My expecting mommies are supplemented with plenty of cottage cheese, chicken breast and folic acid. There are also lots of nickel and dime type expenses in caring for a litter, such as all natural baby wipes (I go through about a tub a day with a litter!) and puppy pads and the list goes on... On average, my puppies see the vet twice. Usually for a wellness check early on and then again for the first set of vaccinations and worming.
Bulldogs are the hardest to breed of any other type of dog and have the highest mortality rate. With all of these things taken into consideration, I do hope you understand why they are so costly and realize that any breeder doing things the way they should be done without cutting corners isn't making much in the process. Breeding should not be done if money is your motivation. For those of you considering breeding bulldogs and thinking you are going to make money- you will lose out! Consider yourself warned.
My puppies generally sell for between $2,500 and $2,800 to approved homes only. I can add you to a notifications list which means I will send e-mails notifying you when a breeding takes place and also when I have confirmation of pregnancy. I do generally send an occasional litter update (and pictures!) as well until they are ready for their new homes. Once the puppies are about 3 weeks old is when I start the process of choosing the best homes for them. They are ready to go home at 8 weeks old. Feel free to fill out an application that can be found on my "Puppies" page!
